Mat Day will be familiar to blues audiences around the country as the lead guitarist with The Greg Coulson Band. His involvement with Greg has taken him to blues clubs and festivals all over the UK, in addition to supporting the James Taylor Quartet on their 2022 UK tour.

Mat got his start with a blues/rock/funk band from Birmingham called Kimmy and the Wahoos. The band became well established in the pub and club circuit in and around Birmingham, where Mat honed his skills as a professional guitarist.

Besides Greg Coulson, Mat is involved with a number of other music projects, notably as guitarist with Billy Lockett, with whom he played festivals around the UK last summer, including BST Hyde Park, no less. And Mat recently toured with The Blockheads, and recently joined Alice Armstrong's band as lead guitarist. In addition, he also works with the Northampton based singer Afreine.

A Short Video Introducing Mat Day

In spite of his popularity as an in-demand sideman and session musician, Mat’s heart and soul is deeply rooted in the music that inspired him to pick up the guitar in the first place - the blues.

In order to pursue his real passion, Mat recently embarked on his own blues-based project, The Mat Day Band. With the experienced Luke Palmer on bass, the multi-instrumentalist Sam Round on drums, and the young and highly talented Ben Maxwell on keyboards, Mat began working on some original music, and the band's debut EP dropped on 6th April 2025. Consisting of a mix of self-penned originals, and Chicago-style blues standards, the music draws on inspiration from icons of the blues guitar, such as Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robben Ford. The album is currently available on all streaming platforms. Simply search for "Mat Day Band". And check out Stephen Brayne’s excellent review of the EP. Stephen is a regular editorial contributor to Blues In Britain magazine. You can read his 5-star review of the EP here.

The following video is a recording of the band performing the Mat Day-penned "No One Else To Blame" at the EP launch part on 6th April in Northampton. The band included a horn section for this special occasion, and the wonderful Esme Edwards stood in on bass for Luke Palmer, who was absent due to illness.

The Mat Day Band is “ one of the most totally stunning, on every level, gigs I've ever had the incredible good fortune “ (to attend)

".... it would seem to me that The May Day Band should be getting major air-time and playing the festival stages now.... Can’t wait to see them live! The band is hot!"
